Natural Indoor Outdoor Fertilizer
What Are Worm Castings?
Our worms generate large amounts of garden compost known as worm castings. Worm castings are, in essence, worm manure. It is fine in texture, yet crumbly, and is almost odorless - it has a slight earthy humus aroma. Unlike other soil additives such as chemical fertilizers and mammal manures, worm castings will not burn plants even if over applied. That's because worms castings are not man made chemicals. Worm castings contain a highly active biological mixture of bacteria, enzymes, remnants of plant matter as well as earthworm cocoons.
Castings are easily absorbed by plants and are rich water-soluble plant nutrients, and contain more than 50% more humus than what is normally found in topsoil. Worm castings are packed with minerals that are essential for plant growth, such as concentrated nitrates, phosphorus, potassium (NPK), potash, manganese, magnesium, calcium, copper, zinc, cobalt, borax, iron, carbon and nitrogen trace elements, micro-nutrients and are abundant in beneficial live micro-organisms, and plant growth hormones. Again, one of the largest benefits of worm castings is that these minerals are immediately available to the plant, without the risk of burning the plant.
Worm castings increase plants’ resistance to disease and pests, increase bio availability of nutrients to plants, increases microbial activity in soil, makes soil more resistant to compaction and run-off, and can increase germination up to 70%. This makes worm castings a valuable addition to gardens, fields, orchards, potted plants and compost piles.
Worm castings stimulate plant growth more than any other natural product on the market. Unlike animal manure and artificial fertilizers, it is absorbed easily and immediately by plants. Worm castings don't only stimulate plant growth; they also enhance the ability of your soil to retain water due to its texture. Worm castings even inhibit root diseases, such as root rot.
Worm castings are the richest natural fertilizer known to humans. When I buy a new indoor plant ( usually an African violet ) I scrape off the first half inch or less of soil from the top and replace it with pure fine grade worm castings. The organic worm castings supply nutrients to feed a 4" potted plant for about 4 to 6 months.
